We have never had Billy Idol.

But you don't deny trying to get Billy Squier!!

The acts I had never heard of before have ended up being my favorite acts - Robert Randolph, Ruthie Foster, Sister Sparrow. Actually the only band that I found a bit disappointing over the years, and I knew them, was Rusted Root. I had seen them years before and they put on a much better show. Looking forward to Charlie G and The Wet Blankets performing next year!

Remember Jones is going to tear the place down.

hopefully but if not they’ll be remembered as “Remember Jones?” “No, actually I don’t.”

Have to be better than Norah Jones' Maplewoodstock performance. Little too slow for me. I forgot to mention another band I thought was excellent, Third World.

“Billy Idol? No, actually I wish you’d get it in gear.”

I was speaking to my friend And he says the Mahali is from Twiddle and is a Maplewood native. Twiddle I know is doing well so he should be good. my friend also mentioned working man’s Dead. He says they’re good too. He wasn’t too keen on remember Jones. Anyway, that’s all I know!

supposedly he got the name from a teacher who thought he was lazy and called him "Billy Idle"

it was billy ocean, not billy idol.

Underrated running gag on "Everybody Hates Chris" (set in the '80s) was how his sister insisted that Billy Ocean was the superior artist to Michael Jackson and actually invented the moonwalk only to have it stolen by the Gloved One.

There was once a guy who was afraid to walk with his date through memorial park at night because of the lack of lights… he saw billy idol just hanging around on one of the benches and it spooked him….

Very much disliked that Norah Jones twangy country shtick.

Re unknowns, do you remember The Hip Abduction from about 5 years back, an obscure (to me then) Florida band that did Reggae/ world beat stuff very very well. I've since latched on to them and saw them at the shore a few months ago.  Just a terrific, upbeat live act.

Yes! They were excellent! Galactic last year was very good also. I'll never forget the Wailers. I was in the beer garden with my daughter asleep in the stroller. Watching them sipping on a beer thinking this is the life when all of a sudden my wife calls and says my son slipped in the porta potty and we have to go home right away. Got him home, cleaned him up and was able to hear the rest of the show from my stoop.

I'm playing samples of most of the bands and found a couple that I'm glad are on Saturday, rain free!

I love the Hip Abduction!  You're right -- positive music, much appreciated these days.

Funny that none of my music fan people, friends or my own kids who are music fans, ever heard of them but the recent show I saw, at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, was packed with young fans.  Jam band types, it seemed.

So what was the favorite unknown band of 2023?

I really enjoy the Tia Holt Experience - here's a clip - nice version of rock steady at around the 4 minute mark:

A small clip of Red Baraat:

Our sound crew was great and did a phenomenal job with the lighting as well.

I loved the Sunday 12 noon act, Isabella Dussias.

I was happy to see Q-Tip Bandits back. I liked Tia Holt and Me & Nobody a lot. I was arriving right as Isabella Dussias was finishing up. I only heard one song, but it was good!
