Just googled this:

What Food is Ohio Known For? Don't Miss These Iconic Ohio Foods

  • Buckeyes.
  • Goetta Sausage.
  • Barberton Chicken.
  • The Thurmanator.
  • Pawpaws.
  • Polish Boy.
  • Sauerkraut Balls.
  • Klondike Ice Cream Bars.

They make what sounds like a pretty dicey pizza, though fans swear by it.

========================================

Had lunch at an Arthur Treacher's, which I haven't seen in many years. Good eats. Nice fish and great fries.

I've had buckeyes (and Klondike bars, obviously). I've heard of sauerkraut balls. Don't know what any of the others are.

I have doubts about this one:

What is on a Polish Boy?One of Cleveland, Ohio's signature dishes is the Polish Boy Sandwich, a hoagie filled with kielbasa, vinegar-based coleslaw, french fries, barbecue sauce and hot sauce.

You don’t know pawpaw?? Think of it as papaya (yours have much larger seeds than ours)

Don't forget Skyline Chili.

The Buckeyes are yummy.

Klondike ice cream bars are available in Stop & Shop.

Paw Paws grow in N.J.

papaya is tropical, pawpaw is Ohio’s native fruit. Totally different.

I did a deep Google dive on pawpaw last night. Fascinating.

Ohio holds an annual pawpaw festival. Will try to go next year.

Went to Meijer's to do some food shopping.  Was looking for liverwurst, but couldn't find any. Went to deli counter and asked for some liverwurst. They said they had none. I said I just moved to Ohio - is liverwurst a rarity? Kid behind the counter basically said yes, and he couldn't think of where I might find some. Older woman behind the counter tells me about specialty meat store where I could find it. Later I looked up one of them, Dumas. They sell sides of beef, deer and buffalo. I felt intimated to go there and order a half pound of liverwurst. So I didn't.

However, I went across the street where there was a Giant Eagle, where they readily had liverwurst.

Maybe I should tell Meijer.

For some reason, many public urinals are very low. This leads to lots of unnecessary splashing.

Also, I can't remember when I last saw the sun.

Sun may be coming your way!  We had a few sunny hours this morning in Wis after several (very) gray days.  otoh, much colder now. (our weather tends to arrive in Pennsylvania after 2 or 3 days; assume it may pass through Ohio?)

Yeah, they're forecasting a frigid weekend here. I might have to finally put on long pants.

I get what you are saying but I do prefer the very low urinals to the very high ones.  Both ways, it would be interesting to know the rationale behind these choices.

I thought that this might be related to men's height, but after examining the data, it appears that the average height is 5'10" both in NJ and Ohio.  Perhaps a measure of leg height only would be more accurate, but there are no apparent data sets available.  Another possibility would be that the primary urinal contractors in each state are of different heights or urinal preferences.

I did some googling and it appears that building codes vary greatly from state to state or even municipality to municipality with regards to urinal height, depth, width and, generally speaking, placement.

Have always assumed that the lows ones are that way so that boys can use them.

Yeah me too. Usually there's a high one and low one, but sometimes here they're all low.

Getting ready for my first Ohio snowstorm. Only a few inches forecast for Cuyahoga Falls, but I'll be in Chagrin Falls with my brother for the Christmas weekend, and that's in the snow belt, so it'll probably be worse.

you’ll be right in the middle of it. Hopefully you don’t have to go out. I’m hearing it’s going to be blizzard like conditions.

Wheelchair accessibility.

Did you see the new recycling regulations? You got out, just in time.

Do you have a spare room?

The weather here is frightful. Below zero temps. Several inches of snow. Gusty winds. Wind chill -30.

Yeah, I just read through that thread. I've always been a bit of a cynic regarding recycling but this is way over the top.

Ohioans seem to be a lot more lax about their recycling rules. My apartment doesn't even do any recycling.

Ohio seems to be doing a very good job in some Consumer Protection areas. It is not doing a very good job in the Electoral College Democratic area. Not sure of your politics but if I were in your state I'd get very active in local Democratic groups to try to move the state more Blue. And I do my part in Blue NJ by the way. From trying unsuccessfully to get Malinowski re-elected to the very important out of state calls I've made for Georgia and other important stuff.

I have a good friend in Florida who is doing her hardest to try to get a more blue state legislature. It takes a village.

In the Youngstown suburbs, there are town recycling centers, but no municipal collections curbside. It’s on you to drop items off. I imagine you can’t pay that little in property taxes and expect the services we get in NJ…

When we lived in SO, we paid SO Disposal to pick up our recycling.

Here in Edmonton, I paid $3,000 in property taxes for my $600,000 house last year.  Our recycling gets picked up every Friday along with our garbage and compost.

People say that taxes are high in Canada but, having moved from NJ, we found that our taxes (if you include property taxes) decreased significantly.  Services, on the other hand, are much better and, of course, we don't pay anything for healthcare.

Oy, what a mess today.

Been staying at my brother's for the Christmas weekend, with my nephew. Today I thought I'd drive to the apartment so I could get back to unpacking, then drive back for dinner.

Went to my car at about 9AM. Went to start the car, and the key wouldn't turn. Shifter wouldn't move.

Because the battery was dead. And there started an adventure.

Car has two batteries, one under the hood, and the main one in the trunk. However, the trunk wouldn't open, either because it was frozen shut, or because the latch required power.

Looked up numerous you tube videos to see how to attack this. The basic idea they had was to try and get a partial charge into the battery from under the front hood - enough to make the latch work. Unfortunately, none of the videos were an exact match for my car so it was troublesome to apply the solutions.

Anyway and suffice to say, none of their suggestions worked. Could've been our fault.

Tried to open the trunk with the emergency key. Nope.

Called AAA. Got there pretty quickly, but he also gave up pretty quickly after realizing he couldn't open the truck. He said he though the manual latch was broken. That was incorrect. I think.

Went back to step one, which was to try and apply a charge through the fuse box under the hood. At first we had tried to attach a jump starter to the fuse box and that didn't work. This time we attached a charger instead. (There's a very hard to get to terminal in the fuse box expressly for this purpose.)

So we did that and waited, hoping for the best..

Meanwhile we tackled the trunk again. No luck. Brought a pail of hot water to thaw it out in case it was still frozen. We had earlier used a heat gun on it.

No luck.

After an hour (it was now about 1pm and temps were in the teens. My hands were numb.) I went into the car and saw that the clock had moved, and the dashboard showed signs of life, so I pressed the trunk release button and....

Success! The trunk popped open! There was much rejoicing.

So we located the battery and hooked up a charger to it. The battery is big, some 90+ amps, so it would take hours to get a charge into it.

It's now 6pm. I was able to start the car, but my nephew says we need to keep charging, and I think he's right. So I'll just let it charge overnight, drive to my apartment Tuesday morning and hope I can drive back. I do have a jump starter in a box somewhere.

The battery is only a year old. Not sure why it died on me. I'm assuming it was the cold, but I think the battery is faulty.

Given the fact that I need more than $1000 worth of work on the front end, and unknown dollars to keep my exhaust system from falling off, I'm officially in the market for a new (used) car.

Thinking Hyundai or Mazda. Screw this Mercedes crap. I haven't even been able to find a mechanic down here that works on them.
