Old School R&B

Munchies, thanks for the Al Green "Back Up the Train." It really pulled the heart strings. To me the background always sounded like a train.

@arnomation, nice to see another Numero Group fan. Regrettably, I haven't bough a collection since No.10. Where did the Kool Blues and Ebonites come from?

And thanks for the Timmy Thomas, hoops. Embarrassing how many years I once thought that was Steve Winwood's song.

It's funny that you posted that song because when I posted it back on Page 11 you commented on the video (which is different than this one) saying "well thats a fun song but that girl has zero rhythm. lol. "

Figures. Went back and checked and I started at No. 3, the Bandit label. Got some gaps to fill. Thanks.

I try not to duplicate, but the list is on page 23 and I just didnt double check. Page 11? I'm amazed this thread has gone on so long. Over 1000 songs. Amazing.

"If I Could Build My Whole World Around You" duet by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (1967). Also featuring the legendary studio band, The Funk Brothers, the backbone of Motown. Great example of the big Motown sound.

If you love old school soul/R&B, cmon down to BB Kings on Friday July 26th to see the Empro Express Big Soul Band. This is a 15 piece soul review that will knock yer socks off. We will have 7, count em 7 great singers who will bring you the best of Motown, Stax and some surprises. One of the singers, Danny Smalls was just written about by the NY Times and will be appearing in a movie coming out this fall with Forrest Whitticker and Angela Bassett. Our 4 piece acapella and band singers Spank just came back from performing on America's Got Talent in Las Vegas and our singer Sandra Taylor is a winner of Saturday Night at the Apollo multiple times. We will be playing at Lucille's so I believe there is no cover and we start at 8 and play 4 (oh my aching fingers) sets. Come down and dance your posteriors off and when your there say hey, I'll be the bass player.

Not sure what made me think of it, but listeners here should enjoy this Nick Hornby essay, originally from a 1996 New Yorker: "Pain in My Heart."

LOVE Nick Hornby!!!! I've read all of his books, but as a record rat I don't think he will ever dazzle me again as he did with "High Fidelity".

I've got an ear worm that won't leave me alone. One remedy is to share it. I think it's because this week I am channeling the famed sound of Philadelphia producers, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and their great studio musicians, MFSB. I listened to Teddy Pendergrass and The Blue Notes' "Bad Luck" (1975) and realized that the song is basically a prayer; the way Pendergrass cries out to the heavens in the closing still makes the hairs stand on end. In the ways of life, his faith would be tested in ways he could not then imagine. But I digress. Here's the worm. All apologies if it's already posted:

I saw them recently at NJPAC. Great concert, they sound as good as ever.

DottyParker, you had me at "sound."
