Old School R&B

Brass Construction was the party record for a minute.

Friends of Distinction was great. Their music gets sampled over and over in hiphop.

I'm really enjoying this thread.

Everyone knows the remake...but here's the real deal. Sung LIVE on Soul Train!!

Creeping up on a more current era - this song came out in the early 80's but could have been right at home in 1972.

Sounds like its straight out of a blaxsploitation flick!

Needless to say this has a deeper meaning for me... lol.

my daughter just told me this is one of her all-time favorite songs...guess Im doing something right as a parent...

lol. thats great hank. Most kids know that tune from here -

This is an ode to my parents and long car rides in the chevy!

This was the ULTIMATE slow jam in high school - with the crooners serenading the young ladies in the ear while they danced...

lol. crooning to any girl I danced with would have been the end of the dance.

lol. In honor of the A question of community (changed) thread -

Love 5th Dimension and Gil Scott Heron with Brian Jackson! Reissued all Gil Scott's albums and some killer funk compilations for RCA several years ago.

What is it about this music that makes it so timeless?

I just find it raw and sexual, mellow and earthy.

the men beg so much...

Please baby please baby please baby please...

I am LOVING this music...talk about begging..from those guys, BEGGIN' Keith Sweat was born :rolling:

I heard this on the radio today and thought of this thread...I soooooooo remember wearing out this album!! We girls LOVED us some Peabo! :rainbow:

one of my all time favorites is marvin gaye and tammi terrell's ain't nothin like the real thing, baby.

Oldstone..that is classic old school R&B for sure...they were great together...

If anyone wants a good read about R&B and soul, look for "Sweet Soul Music" by Peter Guralnick...I got it when it came out in 1986 and it tells the story. Prominent in the world of old school R&B history is the history of Stax Records...Booker T and the MG's, Otis Redding, Carla and Rufus Thomas, the sound of the Memphis Horns which became the backdrop for so many great recordings...I think today Im gonna pay tribute to Stax.

Here's Johnny Taylor and two of his greatest hits..."Who's Making Love?" and "Cheaper to Keep Her"

Sam and Dave - wonderful.

Oldstone - heres my fave from Marvin and Tammie -

Beyonce was really good in Cadillac records but Etta James is an icon -

of course, the Staples...talk about music that influenced me and moved me! If youre on Facebook, become a fan of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music...you'll get a cool video and/or story daily.

and this one was the party jam in Brooklyn in my day -

great song, hoops, but I always preferred this one...

I love Kool and the Gang before the disco era -

and most young folks remember that beat from this
