Old School R&B

hank - you are deep.

THEY DO NOT MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS ANYMORE!!!

THE EVERYDAY PEOPLE - 1971

I LIKE WHAT I LIKE

Ah, when R&B morphed into Funk.

This song is just musical brillance

No question esiders. I posted that song on page 1, but its worth a second helping...

HOOPS - if you don't already own it, you need to get the Crooklyn soundtrack, parts 1 & 2. A good number of the songs on this thread are on those albums.

I'll look into it. I guess me and Spike Lee have some things in common...

I love the Spinners!!

1. Prepare yourself . . .

2. Could it be?

3. Don't know how I work all day!

Great thread!!! For all you classic R & B and soul lovers out there, my band, Empro Express Big Soul Band, will be playing at Maplewoodstock this year (Sat July 10th at 7PM). We have 3 great singers:

Sandra Taylor-3 time winner of Night at the Apollo contests, should go pro but she's a NYC High School Principal and loves her job.

Danny Smalls-A more authentic old school soul shouter (in an Otis vein), you won't find. Danny just came back from Europe where they were shooting a documentary of him.

Norman Davis-Smooth and funky, just the right combination.

You can check us out on our website: www.emproexpress.com, or go to Youtube and put in Empro Express at Connelly's (we play there fairly regularly). You will find a video of each of our great singers on Youtube.

Hope to see y'all at Maplewoodstock.

PS-We don't want you sitting on yer lawn chairs, we want you up and dancing!!!!

obviously no cell phone back in the day....

Or Caller ID . . .

I'm sorry you couldn't call me
When you got home
But other fellows kept on calling
While you were gone

So I had the number changed
But I'm not acting strange
Welcome home
Baby, nothing's wrong

R&B for Memorial Day weekend....

sometimes, hit songs had musical responses...like these two songs...

then...

father_bear - one of my favorite spinners songs -

Sampled a million times by hip hop artists.

hank! I was about to post woman to woman. I never heard that response song.

Whats an R&B thread without some Ashford and Simpson songs -

the great diana ross and the supremes version

No ol' skool discussion is complete without the Major!

How about some more soulful sounds from Philadelphia?

And it doesn't get more Philly than this classic from the O'Jays!

lol Steve. I was about to post Major!

The Stylistics are one of the all-time greats. I've been trying to post a little less well known cuts but I could listen to them all day long.

The O'Jays are great. Just skip the disco era... lol.

along the same lines...old school for sure...

wow hank. I posted one you already posted and you posted one I already posted.

I guess those songs are back in circulation... lol..

I have to pay more attention.

they all seemed to fall in line after Two Way Street

here is a guy who is so under-rated by the main stream but this song started every party back then and still rocks the house today.

I saw them in concert with Earth Wind and Fire about 4 or 5 years back. Tremendous.
