Politics is pretty important right now

The whole section is an acquired taste and that's how it got into a sub-forum in the first place.

I've decided to look at the extra click as entrance into a VIP room. Shades of Studio. I think we should take it further. Secret portals. With passwords. Kind of like the computer that Trump hides his phone conversations.

Okay, I’m in. Let’s not tell that one person any of the passwords on the politics threads!

So ban the ridiculous person monopolizing all the threads. The rest of us could then have a normal discussion.

Did you read those threads?   Who do you think the "ridiculous person" was since there were multiple people involved in the discussion?  Maybe those people found that discussion interesting and normal.  What's a "normal discussion anyway?"   I don't think it's "normal" to suggest banning a person based on one person's description.

And, FYI, I was not posting on that topic but I don't think the discussion was "not normal" or that there was one "ridiculous person" who should be banned.  You are calling for real censorship there.

And this is why I'd prefer it to be a sub-forum. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I don't need to subject to it every second. I will defend your right to speak, nan, but my mother told me to keep my politics private. What I thought and how I voted was no one's business...

I don't understand what you are saying.  I was critical of conandrob2 because she called for someone to be banned without any real knowledge of a discussion that person was engaged in.  I don't think we should be calling for people to be banned based on someone else saying they did not like the way the conversation was going.

So, what does that have to do with keeping who you are voting for private?  It's a free country.  You can keep your opinions on politics secret or you can argue them for the world. Up to you, as is discussing politics on a community discussion board.  But, I am curious about your mother's view.

Did you ask your mother why she believed that? I would be curious why she felt politics needed to be kept under wraps. Is that only for girls or all people?  I can see where that would be good advice at work, but not out in the general world where we talk to other adults.  Your mother's advice would prevent you from talking openly or campaigning, so how is that beneficial to Democracy?  The more people don't talk about politics and vote in secret, the more power is given to the system and the media.  It also cuts a super-important topic out of the conversation.  What topics are OK to be public? Where is the list?

From “up to you” to “how is that beneficial to Democracy?” in 23 seconds flat.

And that’s including a brief detour for “Is that only for girls?”

(Seemed to me that marylago was pretty clear: “What I thought and how I voted was no one’s business.” That’s her right. Full stop.)

FWIW, we were taught ‘nothing contentious in public about Sport, Politics or Religion - generalities only, and pleasant ones when’re possible’. Anything else was for home, within the family; and as mentioned above, one had to be very very careful with whom, if anyone, to share thoughts on votes and personal confidences.

And there’s still a lot of room to exercise democratic rights.

sure it's her right. no one is saying otherwise. but "it's her right" is not the same thing as "it's the best decision".

if everyone held their views to themselves, it certainly wouldn't be very good for democracy, would it? I believe that's what nan's point is.

Yes and no. It seems we have become much less civilized in our interactions with our fellow humans who have differing views. I will act on my views--donate, volunteer, etc.--but I don't need to incessantly repeat them. I am not going to change your mind nor you mine.

And the vituperation I received just on my opinion as to why I prefer politics to be a sub-forum shores up my opinion. There have always been people who want to argue politics; I am not one of them, although sometimes I will get sucked in and I always regret it.

Ever come across someone who was acting within her rights but not making what you thought was the best decision, and just kept your mouth shut? Without going on about how misguided she is, even if the fate of American democracy hinges on the outcome of your encounter?

And, no, it doesn’t hinge. Democracy will be just fine if Americans like marylago (and my dad, who is not a girl) keep their votes, or any other political preferences, to themselves.

See the union discussion in the M4A thread for the last time you said I was missing your point.

Not clear to me why she felt she had to say that, given the context.  Hopefully, she will explain.

I sense that this thread is about to devolve from a thread about politics into yet another thread about Nan's grievances.  I'll bet someone owes her an apology.

LOL

So being "civilized" means being nice to the nice and the not-so-nice and feeling superior to the common arguing lot?  Is this lifting pinky territory here? Seriously, we are at end-stage capitalism now.  Half the people in our country are poor and  500,000 go bankrupt every year because of healthcare costs.  I don't see politeness being a major need here when it comes to nominating the best person to defeat Donald Trump.

Of course, you can do as you like, but when you express your views on a public message board, you should not expect the responses to follow your definition of civility--whatever that is.  You should not be trolled, but if you can't handle my response without calling it "vituperation" perhaps you are not cut out for this and are right to be demure and circumspect and offline.

This is yet another one of your personal attacks on me--which I am generally ignoring. They add nothing to the conversation and just take up room and call attention to yourself--which seems to be the goal of trolls.

However, I want to highlight it here as an example of not-acceptable and not nice and not polite dialog, This is very different than a spirited, yet aggressive and sometimes argumentative discussion.

LOL!  I knew there was someone who owed her an apology and low and behold, it turns out it is me.

This is so boring and it happens on thread after thread.  Its not a personal attack to observe a pattern of behaviour. Your persecution complex is tiresome, its tedious and I think we have reached a point where you owe everyone else a big apology for wasting our time with this nonsense.

Reading this thread made me change my opinion from agreeing with the OP to agreeing with Jamie.

It’s a shame that one lunatic (or two) has resulted in the rest of us not being able to enjoy a normal political discourse

Until he is impeached and removed from office or defeated  for re-election or otherwise deposed political discourse in this country will not be normal.

All the more reason we should be discussing the impeachment everywhere and anywhere we can and not burying it away as a typical “politics” thread

C’mon!

It is no big deal to click to the Politics forum. Further, it is completely understandable why it is set apart.

As much as many of us skim past some posts, censorship is not the answer.

maybe my brilliant suggestion got missed among all the foofaraw , but why don't we just have an impeachment thread that appears on the main page under the Soapbox category, and we can leave the other politics threads hidden away?

jamie?

The Durrell’s and Poldark are back, so that’s nice.

I think this thread is a great example of why most of you can’t be allowed to play with everyone else.

I also think it’s the epitome of privilege to be ‘protected’ from politics. Not everyone can live that way.

I’m also very comfortable with being a sometime contributor to threads that have to be hidden. I like troublemakers and rabble rousers.

Thank you for the elegant solution, coded in above. cheese
