WINTER STORM WARNING Tuesday Midnight - Thursday morning 3/20 - 3/22

that’s some exceptionally dry air. Going to be interesting to see what it does to the snow we get. For now should keep the snow at bay, but wouldn’t be surprised if we get snow this evening.

Freezing rain/sleet has been falling in Trenton since about 2:30. Sidewalks are crunchy. Hasn’t turned to snow yet.

Started to see sleet/ice pellets here in Basking Ridge about 30 minutes ago.   Brick walkways starting to become a bit slick.   Outta here.

Is there any chance of making an 11:18 flight tomorrow from Newark to Tampa?

Joe DiVincenzo just called me. Apparently a storm is coming.

No parking on county roads starting tonight for snow clearing.

Cherry Lane and Brookside Drive in South Mountain Reservation will be closed starting at 12 noon on Wednesday until 7 a.m. Thursday morning, weather permitting.

hmm, someone should start a thread.

And how is Joey D?

Weather geniuses: I’m currently scheduled to land at JFK tomorrow at 8pm. Yhere is a flight to Newark landing at 3pm. I assume that both are terrible, but is one less terrible?

Probably later at jfk

the barest flurry has begun at Home Depot.

I am in Burlington and it is coming g down hard. Has been for 30 minutes

Thanks, @WxNut2.0! Guess we’ll hold tight.

Latest forecast I heard is that the speed of the storm has picked up so snow will start more like midday than the evening rush hours.

No precipitation in Motown as of yet but the sir is saturated.  And the temperature is dropping fast.

Why do they close those roads?

Afrer the last storm there was extensive tree damage, probably crossing the roadway, so I’m guessing they’re trying to be pro-active so that no one gets crushed by a falling tree

callista, to showw they are doing something.

Why do they close those roads?

Last storm, many trees fell across those roads, making it dangerous to even try to plow.  Looked like a war zone, stayed closed for several days.

I noticed the closures after the last storm. I just wondered if they were peremptorily closed evrytime we had a big snowstorm.

Is there a reason they are waiting to call it for MAPSO schools?   I don’t fancy having to drive up to the Annex for an early dismissal.

Think they want to hold out till they see the white of the.... snow? Already eating into spring break. I get their caution but I’d bet $1 that no one is going to school tomorrow. Plan accordingly.

Forecast:

A WINTER STORM WARNING will be in effect from 6:00am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning until 6:00 Thursday morning (3/21-22).

Tonight, light snow. sleet. or rain with no significant impact before midnight.  After midnight, snow, becoming heavy before dawn.

Tomorrow (Wednesday), snow, heavy at times.  Snow will become heavier after 10:00 am and we are likely to see some significant banding after noon with snowfall rates of 1 - 2"/hour possible in those bands.  Snow is likely to continue into the evening hours, tapering off around midnight.  Snow showers may continue into the early hours Thursday.  Wind steady all day at 15 - 20 mph with possible gusts all day up to 30 mph.  During heavy snow band formation visibility will be low, but drifting will be minimal due to the wet and heavy nature of the snow.

Thundersnow is possible.

Unlike the last two storms, the bulk of the airmass is cold, so snow formation will be constant (little chance of a changeover to rain after midnight tonight).

Total accumulation depends on where the bands set up and on whether is stays below freezing the entire time.  The NWS for the New York region is taking no prisoners with a forecast of 12 - 18" for all of Essex County.  The Philadelphia Region is more moderate, with 8 - 12"" for the area just south and west of us.  I think both offices are posting the higher end of the probable accumulation and hoping to bust low.  While I keep coming up with more like 6 - 10" I would recommend you take the NWS very seriously, they are much better at this than I am.  I think they have a point -- for this storm it is better to be prepared for 18" and get 10" than the other way around.

Snowmaps below.

I mean... am I good or what?

it’s raining lightly in downtown Manhattan.

There was that strange siren I sometimes hear in MAPSO at around 8:00pm this evening.  Sounded like the old noon whistle.  Any ideas why? State of emergency perhaps?

Max -- thank you so much for doing these threads.  They are so incredibly helpful.

I've been told the siren is the alert that schools are closed. Same person told me they'll sound it again at 7:00 tomorrow morning.

For one of the other storms in the past month, the siren sounded in the early morning and I wondered if it was a dream. Then it sounded again at 7:00 and I knew it wasn't a dream, but I ignored it. Bottom ;ine: If it were an actual emergency, my kids and I would be toast.

What angelak said!  I have checked this thread a rediculous quantity of times today. WAY more than I've checked the weather channel.  Thanks so much Max - and WxNut2.0 as well. Really helpful. Stay warm!

Weather Channel.. nah

Accuweather... nope
