Reagan's racist comments

Why won't you answer my straight-forward questions?

Because you’re like the kid who comes to class full of questions without having done the homework, hoping to distract everyone until it’s time for recess.

If you really want to understand someone else’s POV, try meeting him or her halfway. (Lord knows I’ve taken in my share of Hidden Tribes findings and IDW writings and videos.) In that regard, you’ve got a ways to go.

I second all those urging you to actually put in the work to understand a complicated topic if you sincerely want a serious discussion, but in the meantime, give this a try proseasdf:

Let's say you and I both work at Acme Corp. You are my manager, but I make a higher salary. Who has more power at Acme Corp? You, who after all have a great deal of influence over my career while I have little over yours, or me, who because of high demand for my skills on the market gets paid more?

Who would be the person handing out homework on a message board such as MOL?

My understanding is that message boards are for sharing facts, experience and opinions.  I have never heard of homework being given to those who participate on message boards.

Perhaps you are describing attempts to understand others as "homework."  Help me understand whether you are using "homework" as a metaphor for something else.

my question for you was because I didn't see your list of questions as an honest attempt at understanding.  It looked more like a list of loaded questions that you should have known the answer to.  Is Barack Obama black?  Please.  Your question is a little too close to Rush Limbaugh's "Halfrican American" slur.

just my two cents, but if you're white and you're trying to explain what you think racism is, you're off base.  I don't pretend to be an expert on this topic, which is why I try to listen and not put forth my thoughts.  Of all the topics I've ever seen discussed on MOL, I'd say I've learned the most about racism from people like flimbro who have experiences I could never have.  I've got a long way to go, as most (if not all) white people do.  But on this topic, I think white people could do a lot more listening and a lot less explaining (or defining).

“Like the kid who ...” is all a simile.

I hope that helps. Recess!

My motive was pure for asking such questions.  You are the one who projected malice or dishonesty onto my questions.

Before your posting,  I have never heard of RL's "Halfrican American" slur  which you reference in your post.  I don't associate with people that would speak that way (or listen to RL).  Clearly, you have a lot of baggage which you are projecting onto me without evidence or any rational basis.

I'm not the only one who replied that they didn't think your questions were sincere.  Maybe you should reconsider your tone.  If it was just me, you could chalk it up to my bias.  When it's more than one person, maybe it's you.

How would you, or anyone, discern tone in an online posting?

My analysis of the situation:  is that you do not like the questions that I was asking.  Instead of responding to my questions, you engaged in false projections of motive to me.  And, now negative comments on my tone.  All I did was ask questions that you apparently do not like to even acknowledge (let alone answer).

there you go.  perfect example of what I mean.  Maybe you should head to the dictionary and inform all of us on the various meanings of the word "tone."

Maybe, you should instead just answer the question regarding how to discern"tone" in an online posting.  IMHO, "tone" appears to be pejorative that you use when you disagree with someone online but do not want to respond substantively.

how about pedantic, sometimes obtuse and overly argumentative?

 Thanks for your substantive feedback.

In true MOL form, this thread has gone completely off the rails.

 Thanks for your substantive feedback.

sin·cer·i·ty

/sinˈserədē/

noun

  1. the quality of being free from pretense, deceit, or hypocrisy.

Questions for you as follows:

Q1. What did you find substantive about ml1’s feedback?

Q2. Why was it substantive?

Q3. When you say “substantive,” do you put the stress on the first syllable or the second?

Q4. How SUBstantive or subSTANtive is that “thanks”?

Q5. For example, is it as solid as BHO’s black heritage, or as his white heritage?

Q6. Still pending: 8 ÷ 2(2+2) = ?

A1.  Explained what ml1 believes my "tone" issues are (namely, pedantic, sometimes obtuse and overly argumentative).

A2.  Because, ml1 made an effort to flesh-out an otherwise meaningless term, "tone."

A3.  Irrelevant.

A4.  Irrelevant.

A5.  Question does not make sense.  Provide some foundation for the question and I will respond.

A6.  Not really relevant but I previously responded to this question.  This question tests order of operation.  My recollection as to order of operation is as follows: i.) parentheses; ii.) multiplication; and then iii.) division.  Which gives a result as follows: 1= 8 ÷  8 (with interpretation that multiplication sign has been "dropped" between "2" and parentheses).

Now that I have answered your questions, I will have some questions for you later this afternoon.

did I miss the pop quiz too?  Hoping it covers geography.

fwiw, I thought my comment from 8:35 last night was a lot more subSTANtive, but we're not discussing the SUBstance of that, are we?

In the quote posted above, I was responding to the DaveSchmidt homework comment of 08052019 at 1PM (however, you are apparently responding to the questions that I posted earlier).  As a result, my questions are not posted in green quote above (I have pasted the relevant questions to which you were responding at the bottom of this posting).  My analysis of your (ml1) posting follows:

ml1 sentence one ("1"): my question for you was because I didn't see your list of questions as an honest attempt at understanding.

proeasdf response to sentence one ("1"):  from your POV, my questions were NOT honest.  You give no basis for your conclusion in this first sentence.

ml1 sentence two ("2"):   It looked more like a list of loaded questions that you should have known the answer to.

proeasdf response to sentence two ("2"):  not loaded questions at all.  Additionally, I was attempting to determine what the general consensus on these questions as there are multiple ways to look at such issues.

ml1 sentence/thought three ("3"):  Is Barack Obama black?  Please.  Your question is a little too close to Rush Limbaugh's "Halfrican American" slur.

proeasdf response to sentence/thought three ("3"):  So, we are back to you fabricating quotes for other people (there is a word for this).  Instead, I posed this question as "Q6" (restated here):   For example, is BHO a member of a "target group"?  With this follow-up question to Q6:  If so why (mom is white and dad, BHOSr, was African who came to the US in 1961 for several years)?

My prior response (8:41am today) to the Rush Limbaugh's "Halfrican American" slur posed by you is as follows:  Before your posting,  I have never heard of RL's "Halfrican American" slur  which you reference in your post.  I don't associate with people that would speak that way (or listen to RL).  Clearly, you have a lot of baggage which you are projecting onto me without evidence or any rational basis.

ml1 sentence four ("4"):  just my two cents, but if you're white and you're trying to explain what you think racism is, you're off base.

proeasdf response to sentence four ("4"):  I am not trying to explain anything.  I am merely asking questions.

If I have time, I will respond to the rest of your posting tomorrow in the AM.

============================================

Repost of my questions set forth in my posting of 11:34am yesterday:

Q1.  So how can I determine which groups are "target groups"?

Q2.  Do you have a list of "target groups"?

Q3.  For example, would Asians be considered a "target group"?

Q4.  Would Hispanics be considered a "target group"?

Q5.  Please explain to me who is on the "target group" list (if such a thing exists) and who            makes such determinations.

Q6, For example, is BHO a member of a "target group"?

If so why (mom is white and dad, BHOSr, was African who came to the US in 1961 for several years)?

The first paragraph, well...
