Seth Boyden teacher accused of removing student's hijab during class

Pure stupidity on the teacher’s part. She will most likely lose her job.

because you know the incident played out exactly as Ms. Muhammad has said?

btw - her going public the way she did is extremely irresponsible.

Please can we wait for some due process.

Because I know how these things can go once the court of public opinion is involved. They are now labeling this teacher “A racist monster, who should not be allowed to teach our children” My comment about her being stupid has more to do with how things are regarding race and religion, she should have exercised common sense. As for Muhammad going public this early on, you are partly right BUT we all know what the goal is on the part of most people when making things go “viral” In the end, the teacher will lose her job. Sad but that is the truth, as I don’t see how she can turn this around. Such is life

I'm surprised the police have been assigned to look into this.

Companies where leadership is accused of being sexists or racist are investigated by law firms or civil rights agencies. Police are not called who are not well suited for this type of task. Resolving issues  like this using investigators which include experienced civil rights lawyers is usually best practice.

I am more than surprised. It's inexcusable, IMHO, for the Bd. of Ed. or the Superintendent to not have taken responsibility to conduct an internal investigation before turning it over to the Police. What do they think their job is? It's a complete shirking of responsibility.

Why is the teachers' union not weighing in?

Do we know who referred the matter to the police? As in, was the the Board of Education, or as a result of a complaint?

From the chief’s email to The Village Green, it doesn’t sound like it was either a referral or a complaint (though “mostly” leaves some room).

“I can confirm MPD is in the very initial stages of conducting an investigation for possible criminality,” DeVaul wrote in an email. “My department learned late this evening of the allegations mostly through social media posts.”

It could be something like it was a hot day and the teacher asked if she could take if off in school because it was hot...it could be that it wasn't fitting right, hanging over the students eyes or was slipping and distracting the student and the teacher tried to push it up....or the story could be fully accurate.  I know a man who insisted an incident was racist (he was denied service).  I tried and found out everyone was being denied service because they had nothing left to be served......

Couldn’t agree more. She has a large following. She posts this as if it’s a verified fact and discloses the teacher’s name. Very disappointing.

The teacher’s lawyer has released a statement that the teacher asked the student to put her hoodie down and rescinded that request once she realized the student was not wearing a head scarf underneath the hoodie as she normally did.

can't wait to see what the police turn up.

(start wild speculation)

Just to speculate, because, what the hell, I could see the second grader getting very upset at the hoodie request because she knew her head would be uncovered (is that a healthy thing? YMMV). And then maybe the child had to explain to mom where her scarf was, since it wasn't on her head. So she said the teacher took it. This is second-grader, after all.

(end wild speculation)

And for obvious reasons the teacher is now in fear for her life and has had to request police protection.

This would explain why the student needed  to laughingly ask her mother to remind her what to say on the original video…

I seriously hope that someone got a copy of that video before it was taken down

I'm hesitant to post a link to the lawyer's statement because it names the teacher, and she has been through more than enough already.  It is easily findable on google.

Part of the quote from the teacher's attorney:

"Ms. xxx did not, as has been alleged, forcibly remove a student’s hijab or tell a student that she should not have to wear a hijab," Harris said.
"In accordance with school policy, Ms. xxx directed a student in her class to pull down the hood on a hooded sweatshirt because it was blocking her eyes – and immediately rescinded that request when she realized that the student was wearing the hood in place of, rather than on top of, her usual hijab.

"The misinformation shared on social media has caused tremendous harm to Ms. xxx – a teacher who, after more than 30 years of devoting her heart and soul to children of all backgrounds, has now had to ask for police protection due to the threats she is receiving following the dissemination of false information on social media."

My nephew had this teacher when he attended Seth Boyden 20-odd years ago. Our family finds these allegations very hard to believe. I hope Ms. Muhammad hasn't destroyed a long-time teacher's life in an attempt to advance her own social media presence.

Not to worry about the family's well being. A GoFundMe campaign has been started. So far, it has collected $35.00 of a $10k goal.

If she can't win the "jackpot" her friend complimented her on, .... well, maybe some suckers will send some cash.

I have a hard time believing this whole “she said, she said” drama. The teacher is, and has been one of the best in the district. People who have large followings on social media should be careful what they say.

Zaynab Wyatt is the girl's mother. I'm sure there's no financial motivation, right?

As for our fencing champion, you had your 15 minutes...

The GoFundMe campaign has been cancelled.

Awww.. There goes the trip to Disney.

Regarding my comment on fencing champion, wrong person. Comment retracted from original quote.

Without getting into specifics, it’s surely possible to defend one person without having to attack the character of the other person, yes?

I thought your comment was on point, actually.

to ridski, Mohammed has not behaved well in this matter. And that's putting it mildly.

or are we talking about someone else?

It’s a fine About Us, and Muhammad’s social media presence was already well advanced.

So we have one person who is a follower of a religion based on racism (Read: "The Autobiography of Malcolm X."  She is then egged on by an outright racist.

What's not to like about pointing this out?

I hope the teacher sues for slander.
