Waco melee... 9 people dead... but don't you dare call it a riot!

Idiot American men and their stupid guns. Again.

Why do so many morons own guns legally in our country?

When is America going to wake up?

Totes *sarcasm* . (Don't believe Alanis Morrisette... ) But I got it right away.

However, when we assign race to any particular behavior, it fuels the idea that having racial stereotypes is okay. One of my pet peeves is "white trash." Would you say "black trash" without adding "bag" to the end? Oh, but the list goes on and on...

How about calling out scumbags on their actions instead of their race?

I'd agree, except it isn't just men.  There are idiot women in this country who just have to have their guns too.

I think white people need to explicitly distance themselves from this kind of behavior and condemn it in the harshest terms.

Absolutely agree, except for the "white" part, as these gang members are a danger to anyone regardless of race.  These are criminals, romantic notions of organized crime as portrayed by Hollywood does a disservice when people start to believe the fairy tale.  These criminals also do fund raising for charities to gain sympathy from the local community so they will forget the vile crimes these scumbags are guilty of.  I'm glad to read that no officers or innocent bystanders were injured or killed.

I think Jamie needs to give us an *irony* emoticon.

If you are referring to your original post I'd say it was more along the lines of sarcasm than irony.  I just chose to answer it at face value.

it kind of doesn't make sense to take it at face value if it wasn't meant to be taken at face value.  it actually makes no sense at face value since no one ever says that white people need to disavow the actions of other white people.

and I stand by its ironic content:

a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.

maybe nobody found it amusing, but that was my intent.

If the gangs were black and 9 people were killed, it would have been reported and quickly forgotten. For instance the tag line would be "9 Gang Members Killed in Weekend Violence." Add white people to the mix and you get a different journalistic approach.

With the Waco incident, we got just the news — not the racial pathology

Those who are using what happened in Waco to start conversations about stereotypes and media biases against black people aren't complaining about the tenor of this weekend's media coverage. They're saying something a little different: that by being pretty reasonable and sticking to the facts, this coverage highlights the absurdity of the language and analysis that have been deployed in other instances, when the accused criminals are black.

theres a good description of what happened by someone who culled together all the info they could:

Cops refuse to "credit" the gangs by naming them for media...guess there were no Bloods or Crips.

Hello? The police have been very open about the gangs involved -- the Bandidos vs. the Cossacks.  Or am I missing a joke?

 We both must be.

They let you view all of the mug shoots here. Next to the each pic there is a panel with info including name and race. I flipped through and saw black, hispanic, and white listed. Also atleast 1 woman.

If the bikers were all black, how do you think this story would be covered by the media?  If you think it would be the same, then you are mistaken.

8 people were murdered in the middle of a public restaurant and you call it a "battle."  Seriously?

See, the real issue here is the breakdown of the White American family. All the White men are in prison leaving the White mothers alone to raise the children. Then you add country and rock music to the mix with every White youth emulating their favorite gunslinger. Pretty soon every young White male is riding a motorcycle or driving around in a truck with a gun in the back. Things like these White thugs rioting are bound to happen. I just hope they send in the national guard to keep the peace.

Wait, there was a black guy there? This is definitely Obama's fault then.

You guys are so off base it is incredible. Predictable but still incredible.

I didn't realize how many biker gang members are former military.

Wow now we are moving into attacking veterans.

I saw a show on Discovery about just that. They talked about men coming back from war missing structure and comradery. Apparently some found it with biker gangs.

This phenomenon dates back at least to WW II.  Re-entry into the peacetime world is a difficult transition under the best of circumstances and some service members really have a difficult time.

In first presser, the police spokesman said he didn't want them to be able to advertise their sick groups and so wouldn't name them. Clearly, it didn't take very long to ID them.

I am not attacking veterans at all. I'm a military brat myself. But based on what I've read, the Hell's Angels were formed by returning WWII vets. And I've always wondered why Viet Nam memorial functions have been so well-attended by members of motorcycle gangs. Now I'm reading that lots of Iraq/Afghanistan war vets are joining motorcycle gangs. Are they doing it because they can't/don't want to return to their previous life? Is it a response to mental health damage suffered by so many vets? Is it a good thing for them, finding others who share their experiences? Or should we be doing more to help vets return to a "conventional" life? As the number of veterans increases, are we going to see an increase in motorcycle gang violence? I live in a military town in the heart of Bandido territory, so my interest is more than abstract.

If you know anything about the 1% lifestyle you would know this is normal and happens everyday but not so public. Bringing up race is just plain dumb because I'm sure there were other than white involved.  To me it just sound like someone needs a hug to stop being so bitter life is to short enjoy what you have and worked for don't worry about the people that keep f ing up you can't teach an old dog new tricks....

What’s really sad are the people who won’t even acknowledge the difference in how they are treated based on race and a certain group.  Where was the tear gas, National  Guards and army truck rolling into Waco even after the it was reported that there may be retaliation against the biker groups?

Amid heightened scrutiny over police brutality against people of color and the recent spotlight put on killings of unarmed, Black men, the widely-circulated photographs of Waco police peaceably rounding up the mostly-white perpetrators drew immediate comparisons to images of unarmed protesters facing down police in riot gear in other places.”

I get what the OP is saying.

Do you really believe that if these would have been black men, carrying loaded weapons, who just finished firing at the cops they would be sitting so nicely? Do you think the cops would not have had every one of them on the ground in handcuffs? Do you think more would not have died? There were more than 100 guns recovered! More than 100. Cops killed 4 of these guys who were shutting at the police. And yet you think they received the same treatment when there are unarmed black men being killed regularly by the police? Yeah right.
