The Americans

I never would have guessed that this is how they'd become realigned. So even though she cursed Phillip for what he did, his little speech got to her. He knows her well.

How about that about turn? Who knew Elizabeth’s cold, blackened & hardened heart could be moved? I was not prepared.

It don't think it has anything to do with her heart. She's a by-the-book loyalist. She works for the party. Which means she works for Gorbachev no matter what.

Exactly. I don't think her heart is black. She is a soldier fighting a war, loyally following orders because she believes in the cause she is fighting for.

Never watched this and I can't review the thread due to spoilers.  Please advise on the most accessible source.  Netflix? Amazon?  On Demand?  We have FIOS, FWIW...

 Season 1-5 are on Prime.

Thanks very much, Madame Secretary.

It occurred to me today that the only killing Elizabeth did in this episode was not strictly necessary and very compassionate. And then when she really should have killed Jackson she didn't.

she’s killed enough innocent people to not cut her a break.

If you have FIOS you can find it On Demand on FX.

Wow. My comment was about the artistry of the showrunners and Kerri Russell. The way her actions in this episode reveal her feelings for Erica Haskard.  What her failure to kill Jackson (& Nesterenko) says about her growing suspicion that the people from whom she has been taking orders may not be trustworthy, her confidence in the war is wavering.

Elizabeth used to align nationalism with the KGB, but now that those waters are muddied, it's easier to discard orders.  If there's one more person Elizabeth might stab in the neck, it's Claudia.

I wonder if Paige's photo pops up on Renee's computer screen at her new FBI job in personnel next episode?

Meanwhile Philip's weakening business from overspending and expanding too quickly is an obvious metaphor for the USSR.

I haven't watched yesterday's episode yet.  I'm just not ready to accept that this can unravel in two episodes.  How? Where is the long drawn out spy chase? Stan deserves a chase LOL.

I think it was Hemingway who said, "gradually, then suddenly."

OK.  Next guess:  Stan catches them about to relocate/scram and tells them to stay and that he won't turn them in -- a personal glasnost.  Stan becomes a travel agent at Philip's agency and lands the FBI account.

More likely that Stan catches them decamping for the USSR, gives them a long hard look, then tells them to go, get outta here.

They get caught trying to hightail it out of there. I’m not sure if they try to get their kids first or ditch them, this will slow them down. There’s at least a confrontation between Stan and Philip. Whether it ends in words or someone getting shot, taking the cynaide pill or escaping I’m not sure yet.

At the end of the last episode, Elizabeth said something about going up to NH to get Henry.

did not read the recent posts, but last night I watched Waitress, 2007, starring our Elizabeth—hard to believe it is the same actress. She’s great in it.

When/where can I stream this season?

Oooohhhh. I missed that. So leave Paige, she’s an adult after all? And I couldn’t help but gloat after their fight. Paige needed to know her mother sugar coated espionage.

They get traded for the Americans who have been posing as an ordinary Russian Family in Moscow.

Next year there is a spin-off series about the latter.

Ooohhhh. Never saw that coming but certainly plausible. I hope this won’t be the same as the ending of LOST, which I haven’t watched but everyone agrees was a major disappointment.

Who thinks Renee is another Soviet spy?

 Everybody.

They make it out, but without Henry, who becomes rich by inventing GameBoy. Paige moves to Oregon to live in Rajneeshpuram. Stan gets into deep trouble because it looks like he sheltered his neighbors for years without reporting them, and similarly, for harboring Renee; Oleg takes  Stan back to Russia, where he falls for Martha.

I hope Oleg makes it out.

 Actually I don’t.

They’re in a tough spot because they no longer have support from the Center after Elizabeth killed Tatiana & with Oleg in jail their connection to Arkady is severed but they don’t know it yet.

I watched it again. It was in the coming attractions. It looked like Elizabeth, Philip, and Paige were leaving Paige's apartment when Elizabeth commented about going to New Hampshire.

This is why I don't watch the coming attractions...On the other hand, that's going to be an interesting scene with Henry.

The sketches from the FBI team come in, Stan finally has concrete proof it was Philip, figures out they’ll be on the run and puts a team on Henry before the Jennings get to him.

I've been avoiding this thread for obvious reasons, I fear spoilers, but now I'm all caught up, with one episode to go and the tension is really getting to me. When Philip started to run, my heart went nuts. The coded call to Elizabeth, wow. It's so good. I'll be sorry when it's over. Once it's over, we'll all have to watch something else together. The new series (what's the plural of series?) that FX has been advertising during The Americans, however, haven't appealed to me.
