The horror that is mattress shopping

I've never experienced a comfortable futon.

Futons have changed a lot. We have something like this in our basement. It was used by a visitor for about a month. I offered her to move up to the guest room once it became available (multiple visitors at the same time) and she refused because she really liked it. These are great because they actually look nice when not being used as a bed. We do use a pillow top on it to make it a bit more plush.

Hot damn I love that futon!

Yes we use it more as a couch, and ours is slightly different but very similar in style and shape. I have not slept on it myself so I can't comment on how comfortable it is. But multiple people have and nobody has complained so far or asked for the air bed oh oh

Deborahg, I'm not even kidding, I want to come sit on your futon when it comes.

I had a not too painful mattress shopping experience at Macy's in Livingston. I already knew what I was looking for thanks to a combination of Consumer Reports and a website that gives you all the different retailers' exclusive names for the same standard mattress models... I would describe my salesman as a courtly older gentleman who provided a lot of helpful info and guided me through the process without too much obnoxious hard selling. (He fulfilled his obligations regarding warranties and bed frames... I declined and he respected that.) If anyone wants his contact info I think I still have his business card... I bought my mattress a few months ago.

I think Sleepys owns 1-800-Mattress.

I had a good experience at Macy's. Salesperson was very helpful, no pressure and actually told me that the same manufacturer had the exact same mattress in the factory but with a different finish for 10% less.

And Macy's had a lot more delivery options then Sleepys (which would not deliver on Saturday to S. Orange)

@afa Futon Party! It will be here Friday!

I'm intrigued by that futon. It could actually fit in the room where we watch TV on an ancient sofa that long ago lost any proper support. The price is right, too.

The only thing to worry about--our ancient one is a color that does not show wine spills! question

Related question: where would you look for a bed frame? Simple head/footboard

Maybe my friends got their futons used on SWAP or have just had them for a long time ...

A pillow top could make a big difference.

If I were [cough] the mother of a tall high school student who was likely to need a bed in my house for only a few years, I think I'd hold off on buying headboards and footboards, because before long [cough] I'd be buying yet another mattress and bed frame for his college apartment. If you want a plain old but free full- to queen-size metal bed frame with wheels that Sleepys charges $80 for, PM me.

True, but same hypothetical child is complaining that his mattress is sliding off the cheap metal frame

I bought a very nice modern metal headboard/ footboard frame from Overstock for $150 or so

Turn the frame around. They usually have corners at one end that hold the box spring in place, but are open at the other end. (I'm talking about the metal frames I have had over the years.) If the open end is facing into the room, the box spring will inch off. If the corners that hold it in place face into the room, they will keep it where it belongs.

I don't know whether there is still a Macy's discount center anywhere in NJ, but we bought a mattress and box spring from one a long, long time ago that is still my favorite bed ever. It was not a luxury buying experience by any stretch of the imagination, but I love, love, love that bed.

Also, we got a surprisingly comfy guest bed by buying a day bed at Crate & Barrel. Looks like a beautiful sofa during the day, but turns into a great twin bed by night by moving some cushions around.

The guy who sold us our two grand mattress at skeepys was definitely a moonlghting female impersonator

What a deal! The furniture.com guys just delivered and set up our new couch. Easy to use, comfier than I expected. Thanks again!

PS it's not actually sideways...

Looks great, but it makes my neck hurt! cheese

Which color did you get, the taupe? I like it with the teal pillows.

Ha! I got dark gray...

When we moved to Maplewood a few years ago and popped into the nearby Sleepy's the salesperson was wonderful-extremely pleasant, informed and not pushy. We stocked up the house and surprisingly met a celebrity (who apparently is a regular) in the process!

I still love it!!

A celebrity who is a regular at Sleepy's? Why would a celebrity keep needing new mattresses?

Wait... on second thought, I don't really want to know.

What qualifies as a regular at a Sleepy's. A guy who buys mattresses more than once every ten years
