November snowpocalypse

what happened here? Why was this so underestimated? Yikes!

It's really all relative. If we call for 1-3 and we get 6, its so underestimated. If we call for 24 and get 21, its splitting hairs. The models called for this a couple of days ago, but I think given the time of year people were a bit hesitant to believe it.

Also lets not forget, we're trying to predict the future. Not exactly an easy feat.

What time to shovel snow? 8 P.M.?

Warning:  Courter Avenue between Summit and Norfolk was an active construction site as recently as this morning.  This includes road debris, open trenches where new curbs are being installed and sidewalk replacement work in progress.  Temporary road patches awaiting promised milling and paving, leaf piles, piles of construction materials, and road debris in street and on medians extend the entire length of Courter from Prospect to Oakland Road.  Sidewalks are also blocked in spots with construction tape where sidewalk work is in progress.  Please use extreme caution if you need to drive or walk along Courter Avenue during or immediately after the storm.

I wasn’t referring to you and I get it’s not an exact science but this is a real mess. Just in general, I think the difference between a 3 vs a 6” storm is huge especially from a perspective of people getting stranded out driving in it. The difference between a storm of 21” vs 24” isn’t much in terms of an impact on people.

I thought it was turning to all rain (heavy) overnight? I hope we don’t have to shovel this crap!?!? I’m so unhappy right now. I should have headed to FL yesterday!!! Stupid airlines didn’t waive change fees until late last night. I soooo wish I wasn’t looking at this right now!

Of course. In terms of snow, it’s notoriosl difficult to predict totals accurately. Models output precipitation in terms of liquid equivalent, not snowfall. In order to get snow, we need to make a lot of approximations. Those approximations make precision difficult. Additionally, the heaviest snow is usually also a function of precipitation banding. These types of bands are currently impossible to forecast with a high degree of accuracy.

North Ridgewood is closed down between Mead St and Mountain House in South Orange.  I'm not sure why, but stay away if you can.

I know, I know! I’m just really upset at having to look at this. I thought I’d close the shades and it’d be washed away quickly and I could pretend it never happened. Now, hubby is driving around in this!

Any plows out there?  I wonder how they deal with large leaf piles.

Traffic on Valley Street around CHS/CVS is - literally, not figuratively - not moving. I don't know how far the traffic jam extends or what's causing it, but there hasn't been any movement around here for at least 30 minutes.

Good point! I know all the piles on my street are completely covered. This is such a terrible mess. The traffic seems to be at a complete stand still on the road leading to the GSP that I can see out my window,

It's running the entirety of Valley Street past Millburn Avenue. Stay off it if you can. If you really can, just hole up somewhere until it all goes away.

Northfield Ave in W.O./Liv is apparently a disaster zone right now. JCC is closing early.

Was supposed to go to a class tonight.  Went 2 blocks and got stuck.  Was fortunate to be able to back up and turn around.  Do not drive.

Anyone know how NJT is doing?

A friend of mine lives on Tuscan. He texted that cars are sliding down the hill sideways.

Steer clear of the hill on Jefferson Avenue near Ridgewood.  Cars are not making it up the hill.

Prospect looks as if it has been plowed but it could just be the heavy traffic that has been passing on the road since the storm started.  Traffic is moving, though slowly.  Looks passable for now.  That said, I have seen reports of a traffic accident at the curb at Sommer so drive carefully.

Will this really transition to rain later?  The temp has been dropping pretty steadily for the last few hours.

So lots of kids are still at Jefferson School because their bus has not arrived.  They are safe and being supervised by staff according to the email I just received.

I have to imagine this is the case at other schools.

Just got a note from South Mountain saying the same.  The shuttle from the Big School to the Annex couldn't make it out of the parking lot, let alone up the hill.

Its snowing a lot for November but, in the grand scheme of things, its not an unprecedented amount.  Does anyone know why there is so much trouble on the roads?  Is it the leaves or just too much traffic?

When I went to get my kid from school at 2:30 people were already going down hills sideways and there wasn't more than an inch on the roads.

It should. But we've already been wrong once about this storm.

How is Ridgewood Ave. south of South Orange Avenue?

Been stuck on GSP heading into Newark from Hillside tolls. Have travelled less than one Mike in the last hour. Exit ramp to 78 all but shut down with cars stuck in incline. Spin outs and stuck cars everywhere. Yikes!!

Stupidly, attempted to leave Newstead for NJT to meet daughter and boyfriend for dinner.  Couldn't even get to SO Avenue and on my way back home, some IDIOT passed me on Overhill as I was turning left onto Crest, fortunately, hadn't started the left turn or would have been hit.

It must be the snow itself, not the amount, that is causing all the problems - maybe it is an odd mixture that is making it so unbelievably slippery. I swear I could not get traction,  I kept on slipping, really crazy. This was around 2:20pm and not much on the ground. It really surprised me.

N Ridgewood still at pretty much a stand still heading to SO Ave.

Decided to wait it out at work in Morristown and that was a mistake.  All roads are basically at a standstill.  Had colleagues leave 1-2 hrs ago and they are just now returning to work.  Just a mess.
