Same in here South Orange where I’m crashing for the night...

Just got alert from town that schools are closed today.

Tried shoveling at about 6 am. What is on the ground isn't very deep; but, it is quite heavy.  Rain is also heavy at this point.  I decided to wait since what is on the ground is crunchy giving good footing.  I will try again when conditions are drier.  My main concern is possibility of additional icing later in the morning which could make cleared areas more dangerous to walk on than areas that are left with a shallow covering of snow.

What it is snowing and sticking?????

Winter Weather Advisory for snow and slippery conditions remains in effect until 10am.

Just got on the 8AM from maplewood to Penn St - on time and tons of seats.

Officially, I reported 6.5" just after changeover.  It melted down to 0.91" for a yield of 7:1.  Total 24 hour precipitation has been 1.69", so there was over 3/4" of rain on top of the snow after changeover.

I shoveled last night at around 10pm. It was heavy snow. Maybe 4-5 inches deep.

FB is flooded with harrowing stories of drivers stranded and kids stuck in school buses. It’s crazy.

We got hit kind of hard in Morristown.  Certainly 8 inches.  At 5 AM a lot of snow on driveways and sidewalks, but streets that had been plowed were melted.  It started raining at 5 AM, quickly changed to sleet by 5:15 AM.  Sleet accumulated until about 6:30 AM when it changed over to snow.

well, that was really something else. Wish I hadn’t seen it. God, I hate snow. Hopefully all back to normal,at the airports because we are escaping this mess for sunny weather tonight.

As I might have mentioned before, snow is a 4 letter word!

Obviously, I am not crazy about events like yesterday but, in general, I have to say that I love snow.  I grew up in California so, when we fist moved to the Northeast, it was novel and fun.  The novelty has faded over the years but my kids and I still have a lot of fun pretty much every time we get a good coating.

Safe travels and I hope you have a pleasant trip in whatever warm place you have chosen.

I enjoy the northeast and the seasons. I don’t mind our snow because it comes and goes quickly. You would not catch me dead living in FL. Yuck. Been there, done that. No thanks!

On the front of this mornings NY Times is an aerial photo of Paradise, California.  Blocks and blocks of burned out houses.

I'll take a little snow.

I'll take a little snow.

This is the real big picture.

The early snows are nice.  During a really snowy winter, it becomes progressively more annoying but so what.  Also, you can't beat those crystal clear blue sky mornings that sometimes follow a big snowstorm.

early snows are sooooo NOT nice. Keep snow to 2x a year-Christmas Eve and a nice dark storm deep in January. That’d be perfect. Otherwise, no thanks. Can’t wait to be on the beach. I’m definitely not a “snow” person and grow less and less so every year.

The people on my 2nd town’s message board are reporting how “cold” today is-65 and sunny is a crazy fluke in FL.

For the record...posted this yesterday. I just felt like this was going to be far worse. :/

It snows in Paradise CA.  Paradise is in NORTHERN California.

I took note of your intuition model when things started to go bad.

Florida, its just like Hell but with none of the culture and twice the snakes.

Of the states I've been to(which is to say most of them), it is easily the worst.

I feel sort of the same way about NJ. seriously, though, every state has its good and it’s bad. I certainly wouldn’t put kids in the school system in FL but for my old bones to bask in the sunshine cheaply, it’ll do. My goal is to live off of SS and travel lots with my 401k $, not throw away $20k a year in taxes. Everyone has different goals. My most important one right now is not to be around snow.

Yesterday Governor Murphy & Mayor Parisi of W.O. went to lunch at the Chit Chat Diner to thank the staff for their generosity & hospitality to schoolkids, bus drivers, police and others (including Mrs. Soda) stranded there during our snowpocalypse.

I believe the two also took some (deserved) complaints from diner patrons who needed to vent about the governmental miscues & misjudgments which exacerbated the event's effects in our area.

Good guys take their lumps with grace...

Here's Maplewood's response:

To the Maplewood Community:

Maplewood’s Emergency Management Team reviewed the Township’s response to Thursday’s snow storm and will be taking steps in the future to improve our storm response and the timeliness and clarity of our emergency communications.

The severity of this storm was unexpected. The Department of Public Works was prepared for a minor snow event of 1 to 2 inches not for the 6+ inches of snow we received. On Thursday morning, salt trucks were loaded and equipped with plows. Around 3pm we started the salting operation but our trucks became stuck in the traffic jams and unable to complete their salting routes. Shortly thereafter we began plowing and faced similar difficulties with traffic. In all we had 17 trucks and tractors out on the street and a full complement of DPW personnel. The DPW men and women worked around the clock to clear our streets from the morning commute, coordinating their work with our police department.

Essex County, which is responsible to plow Valley Street, Wyoming Avenue, Millburn Avenue and Irvington Avenue, also had difficulties getting plow trucks through the traffic jams. This delay in plowing and salting made those roads difficult to travel.

The Maplewood Police Department received over 600 calls on Thursday, including 119 calls for service to 911. Most of the calls  were for traffic , vehicle accident and parking related issues. Police assisted over 100 stranded motorists and coordinated efforts with the Fire and Public Works Departments to respond to emergencies. The police did not issue any overnight parking tickets. We realize our message about overnight parking restrictions could have been clearer and conveyed better. We will improve our communication in the future.

We canceled jitney service in the afternoon and sent out electronic messages regarding the cancelation. We heard from some commuters that they did not get that message. In the future we will continue to send out electronic messages and use social media and we will post printed notices about the cancelation at the train station.

Decisions about school closures and early dismissals are made by the Board of Education but they do confer with Township officials. As part of our review of Thursday’s event, we will have a conversation with school district personnel to make sure the decision making system is fine tuned.

Some residents have asked about leaf collection. We will restart the collection of leaves as per the DPW schedule and notify you about any adjustments to that schedule.

We heard from many of you about your terrible traffic experiences on the roads in Maplewood. We also heard that our communications could have been more sensitive and timely. We agree and are committed to making changes and improve our delivery of services.

Thank you.

Mayor Vic De Luca & Township Committee

In other words: Blame Max.
