Whose runaway popularity don't you get?

it's kind of like someone saying they don't like Hendrix because he was a terrible guitar player.

I'll also add that I can't think of anyone really popular whom I can't get why they're popular. I mean I don't personally get K-Pop, but I think I understand why it's super popular.

Paul McCartney wrote stunningly beautiful melodies. Lennon was lucky to have him in order to spew his faux poetry. Aside from that, they did not sing very well and were only mediocre musicians. I agree that there were equally, and more, incredible artists before and after their very brief reign. The longevity of their appeal to my generation is puzzling.

 Go, annielou!

This doesn’t make any sense. When stating “why” one doesn’t “get” a particular artist, isn’t an explanation in order?

Sure. But you stated it as if it's a fact and not your opinion.

Oh, and Niel Young. WTF? This guy has a lousy voice, his songs (with just a very few exceptions) are mediocre at best. I always change the station - or hit skip - when his music comes on.

You meant "exceptions," not "examples"?

With you on the voice, not the rest.  A hugely influential figure in the evolution of folk rock and the singer/songwriter "movement," if you will.

Seth Rogen. My only reply to anybody that disparages the Beatles is "Ob-la-di-Ob-la-da"

Isn’t it obvious that all this is based on opinion, as with everything else on MOL, followed up by links to sites to support ones opinion? If I think the Beatles ( particularly Paul McCartney) cannot sing, it’s their music to my ears.

MY ears. If that does not fit into how “everyone” should hear them, so be it.

Yes, I made the correction, thanks. We'll agree to disagree on Young.

it may be one's "opinion", but when that opinion is based on an extraordinary amount of evidence, you have to start wondering of you kind of missed the boat.

I am also perplexed by the popularity of Billy Joel but not as much as by that of Mariah Carey.
And the State of Florida.  Seriously, if I wanted to go to Hell, I would just commit a lot of sins.

Geez, you seem to be really, really, really upset about Florida. You mention it on every thread. Lol.

the evidence is that in virtually every biography of the early Beatles, audience members and other musicians recount stories of the group's terrific vocal harmonies.  Even when they were starting out, and were judged to be only barely competent on their instruments, The Beatles stood out for their singing.

I'm not suggesting you should like their singing or like anything about them.  But to call them poor singers is just a factually incorrect statement.  I'm no Streisand fan, but I would never flat out state that she can't sing.  I know she can sing, even if her voice is not pleasing to my ears.

No you don't. Not at all.

(But the Boyhood boat welcomes new passengers any time you change your mind.)

of course ya do! That boat is gone! And you ain't on it!

And Boyhood?

Just don't get me started on Roma.

“Audience members” and “other musicians”?? There are many many artists who were, and are, lauded by audiences and other musicians. So what? Is it then a factually correct statement to say they could/can sing? Compared to what? I should reveal that I grew up listening to singers like Sam Cooke and Sarah Vaughn. To me, Paul and friends are not even in the parking lot of the ballpark. (Opinion)

Other than Shea and Candlestick, you mean.

sure. but then again, neither Sarah or Sam has altered the face of the American Songbook.

So there's that.

And that boat.

I can understand why some think Roma is the best film of the year, and others could barely get through it. It's mostly a visual film (and really should be seen on the big screen and not on a laptop), the story really doesn't "go for the throat," as one critic said. Interestingly, as Netflix doesn't usually release numbers on individual programs, there's no knowing how popular it is or isn't.

I like old movies, but am always amazed when someone is asked to name their favorite or a short list, and they name Singing in the Rain. There are a few good scenes, but I have never been able to watch it from start to finish. It's not difficult to find people who say they have watched it a hundred times.

It was a different time, but there was a year or so if not more when one of the most popular entertainers in the world was a woman who sang while she wore a hat full of fruit. Timing is almost everything - if most "popular" entertainers started their careers with the same act and routine ten years earlier or later, they wouldn't have made it.

My daughter reminded me that NSync and MC Hammer also sold out Shea.

@jeffl, you really brought the baby boomers out into the light.

There is no other demographic that would argue The Stone's vs Beatles in 2019.

What does everyone think of Ariana's tattoo?

Is it safe to ski with Gwyneth Paltrow?

Do you all realize that you are about to become a meme about how parents don't understand memes:

Cool. My original remark about Shea referred to the '60s, and had a specific intended audience.

ETA: He wisely ignored it anyway.

nah, I don't get why anyone would consider Roma the best film of the year. Though it was a thin year. While it is visually beautiful (and I saw it on as big a screen as you can get these days in a small-town multiplex. and frankly, Gravity was more beautiful. Cuaron is definitely a genius.), there's more to movies than that. It's just not a complete film to me.

Or maybe this stuff is just above my head. (And there goes that boat again!)

Yikes, Drummer B. Do you think real artists and innovators really give a crap about altering the American Songbook? I don’t even think the Beatles had that in mind. And did it occur to you that “Change Gonna Come” may be as meaningful to large groups of people as any Beatles tune?

Roma was a bore and the director is a fake Fellini. Desperately needed an editor. When the mom told the nanny that women are always alone it should have been cut, credits. Nice cinematography tho.
