Years of the Maplewood NJ Senior (Older Adult)

Update on senior transportation from same email referenced above (paraphrased for clarity):

The Maplewood Senior Bus service will begin going to S.O. on request on Mondays and Tuesdays starting Aug. 8.  SOMA Two Towns For All Ages is working on a way to coordinate the Maplewood and South Orange senior transportation services at a meeting/transfer point, Cathy Rowe spoke with the CVS manager today, who is happy to allow it in his parking lot.  This location on Valley Street is right on the border of the two towns.  This initiative would enable seniors to transfer between town buses for greater service flexibility.

Cedar Ridge Cafe has just been added to the list of Maplewood businesses accepting the classic card.

Important Emergency Information

Hurricand Harvey has made it clear how important it is to be prepared for an emergency. “Register Ready – New Jersey’s Special Needs Registry for Disasters” allows New Jersey residents with disabilities or access and functional needs and their families, friends, caregivers and associates an opportunity to provide information to emergency response agencies so emergency responders can better plan to serve them in a disaster or other emergency. The information collected is confidential, will be held securely and only used for emergency response and planning.

For more information and to register, go to www.registerready.nj.gov or dial 211 (toll-free) and an operator will assist you in registering.

The SOMA Two Towns For All Ages website is going live on September 1, 2017.  www.SOMATwotownsforallages.org  for up-to-date event information, resources and activities.  Check often since content will be added and updated weekly.

The new senior newsletter will be arriving in your mailboxes October1.  If you would like to get involved with this new publication or help with the new SOMA Two Towns For All Ages website, to write, edit, take photos or suggest topics, please contact Cathy Rowe at 973)%20762-8120" value="+19737628120" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">(973) 762-8120 x4005 or Crowe@twp.Maplewood.nj.us.  You do not have to be a senior to do this.

If you apply in person, you get the card immediately as long as you bring proof of age and residence with you (current driver license covers both).

I did this and all I got was a list of which businesses offer discounts.  Guess I need to reapply by mail.

It is possible you applied before the cards were available.  Call Cathy Rowe at Town Hall and tell her what happened.  If your application is on file, she should be able to send you a card by mail. Does your spouse also need a card?

For those who may not have gotten the memo, the Maplewood Senior Picnic has been moved to Thursday due to the rain predicted for tomorrow.  Location has yet to be determined.

Per a request I received earlier today here is a repeat of some material I posted earlier:

The SOMA Two Towns For All Ages website is now live.  You will find it at http://www.somatwotownsforallages.org/  Please check out this website from time to time.  You will find some senior specific information but you will also find information of value to all of us who live in Maplewood and South Orange.

The October/November Newsletter called "Olde News" is back from the printer and ready for distribution.  If you are not on the distribution list, please call or email Cathy Rowe ASAP so you can get the information on county, state and municipal programs and services of special interest to Seniors, special events scheduled for October and November, etc.  Contact information for Cathy can be found at the above link.

Highlights from today's Local Steering Committee meeting.  The Local Steering Committee of SOMA Two Towns For All Ages is entering its next stage.  Anyone interested in joining one of the working groups (subcommittees), should contact Cathy Rowe.  Current working committees include:  Communications, Community Involvement, and Infrastructure.  Suggestions for additional working groups addressing other issues are welcome, especially if you are willing to head up the new working group - though this is not required.

Some additional events coming up soon:

Slips and Falls Prevention, Wednesday October 4th at 10:30 am at Maplewood Hilton Branch Library

Stroke Risk Assessment, Tuesday, October 10th from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at Maplewood Town Hall

For those who have posted to this thread commenting on housing issues and others who have read these comments with interest without posting, you may be interested in attending a program at Hilton Branch library at 1 pm this afternoon.  The focus of the program is co-housing.  Information will be available on other housing alternatives.  Emphasis will be on approaches of special interest to Seniors but much of what will be discussed will be applicable to an inter-generational audience.

SOMA Two Towns For All Ages is in immediate need of volunteers to help with a series of surveys designed to identify ways in which walking in Maplewood and South Orange can be made safer for all of us.  The tasks will involve surveying  both communities by walking  to inspect sidewalks, parking lots lighting etc. Comfort with maps is a plus.  If interested, please send me a PM with your contact information and availability and I will pass it on to the person coordinating this initiative.  Questions can be posted here.  TIA.

Architects to Present Conceptual Design for Maplewood Library for the Future Main Library – Tuesday, Sept. 26 @ 7:30 pm.

If you live in Maplewood and use the library, this could be a must see/hear for you.  Consider going tomorrow evening.

I just received my copy of the Olde News, a newsletter being mailed six times a year to persons age 60 or older who live in Maplewood or South Orange.  This issue has information about SOMA Two Towns For All Ages; information on free public transportation options for seniors 60+ and private transportation options that are especially senior-friendly; details on real property tax savings and home maintenance loan programs for which you may qualify; up-coming events in October and November run by Maplewood, South Orange, or SOMA Two Towns For All Ages; and important phone numbers for municipal departments in Maplewood and South Orange. On the back of the newsletter, you will find our transportation survey.  Please complete it and return it to the address provided. Your responses will help Maplewood and South Orange adjust their Senior transportation offerings to make them more responsive to residents age 60+ in our community.

If you are age 60+ and live in Maplewood or South Orange or provide services to persons in this population and have not yet signed up for your copy, please contact Cathy Rowe at Maplewood Town Hall (name and mailing address are that you need to supply).   If you have not already signed up and would like to obtain this month's newsletter, copies will be available at the libraries, municipal buildings, and select points of assembly in Maplewood and South Orange.

Any questions you may have regarding the newsletter should be posted to this thread since others may share your concerns.

I just discovered that an electronic copy is now available.

I just received this email from Irene Dunsavage who runs the program.  She no longer posts on MOL.  If you have questions, post them here and I will forward them to her.

106 Life Drawing welcomes all who are totally hooked on drawing from the beginner, to the well trained artist and those who are well versed in drawing ..the constant is the love of drawing ..
We seek to engender the love of drawing through greater observation and concentration of the model in a supportive environment .....each student inspires the others in seemingly unknown ways to look and see the models so that individual styles emerge.

The models we bring to our drawing sessions are  trained to pose in challenging and inspiring positions allowing interpretations to be seen and drawn by students.
.
We invite you to draw with us....to set your own goals and develop your skills and sustain your ability to find your own style . Draw to your heart's content .

Please  bring whatever materials you choose to class.
Classes meet every Thursday from 7-9:15 at 106 Burnett Ave.
Fees are $10 per class (when 5 students or more students are present)  to cover the cost of the model .

Looking for a volunteer opportunity?  Here is one where you could make a real difference.  With all of the natural disasters in the news lately, this is a great way to be part of the preparation to ensure that we do not suffer a catastrophic aftermath should an event of this magnitude hit here:

Essex County Public Health Reserve Corps
The Essex County region of the Medical Reserve Corps is seeking volunteers to respond and assist in the event of an emergency. When volunteering for the Medical Reserve Corps, your individual skills will be utilized at a level you feel comfortable with. You will only be doing tasks that you have been trained to perform before hand. What kind of volunteers are needed? Physicians, physician assistants and nurse; non-medical people; social workers/mental health; communication specialists, administrative and support staff; retired people.

If you are interested please visit the Essex County Public Health Reserve website at: www.essexregional.org or call (973) 251-2059..

from Bob Roe:   Maplewood Health Dept.   Thank you Joan for posting about the Medical Reserve Corp.  I cannot stress enough how important it is to be prepared in the event of a weather or other widespread emergency.  First take steps to protect your own family and home.   Then as you are able, volunteers are needed to help those in bad situations.  You can join the Medical Reserve Corp. as listed above to do this.  Please call me at the Maplewood Health Dept. if there are any questions.  All skills are needed.

And now not to embarres Joan, but during Hurricane Sandy, Joan showed up and volunteered to help at the Town Hall.  She wound up answering the Town Hall phones and this proved to be a very valuable service.  She did a great job in answering the hundreds of calls that came into the still working phones at town hall and taking messages and directing people with the right information.

Per Cathy Rowe:

Mila Jasey’s office is offering to help seniors with the “Senior Tax Freeze.”  It is a very complicated filing process, and they are coming to Maplewood Town Hall on October 5, 10am- noon, to help.

Senior Tax Freeze is a State program that will freeze your real property taxes so they don't go up in future years.  Eligibility is based on age and income.  Check page 10 of the October-November issue of "Olde News,"  The SOMA Two Towns For All Ages newsletter for more information.  If you don't have a copy of the newsletter, go to https://content.ourseniorcenter.com/bulletins/06/5292/20171001N.pdf to read the newsletter on line.
